space where nobody is (2020-2022)

This body of work is a continuation of “nothing is really very frightening” (2020).

Following my exhibition at the Regency Town House, Brighton (October 2020) I obtained 37 swabs from across the surface of my aluminium sculpture. These swabs were then swiped across 37 petri dishes that I had prepared. The resulting images in this series depict the organisms that grew within the petri dishes.

Although, their existence confirms the contamination of surface in a COVID secure environment, the identity of these organisms remains unknown.

These tiny orbs depict worlds, similar to celestial objects, that usually remain unseen and which we rarely consider. The sealed petri dishes in which they have grown allow these organisms to remain visible yet isolated from our world, existing in their own time and space.
